Biggest Discovery

Archive Grid and CAMIO were my biggest discoveries. I was very impressed with the amount of information that can be found in Archve Grid. CAMIO was amazing. In rural communities art is appreciated but usually a substantial drive. To have access to these resources without leaving your community is invaluable.

In our library, I would like to develop a handout for patrons. A trifold handout listing each database and its primary function would be very helpful for both the staff and the patrons. The handouts available online for each database can be printed and available in a binder located by each computer. In addition to these ideas, the best form of spreading the news of the resource is through verbal encouragement from the staff. The staff will be trained to offer the appropriate database to  patron requesting information not available in the library. The training for the staff will begin at our next monthly staff meeting. It would be very helpful to our library if the Library Challenge could remain available for training and review purposes. It would not be necessary to have the blog segment; however, to access the challenge for reviewing would be great. I would be interested in adding it to new employee training. There are so many valuable resources. Without revisiting the databases on a regular basis, the new information will be lost. To encourage and ensure constant review, I may put one database per week on the schedule. Each staff member would then be responsible for reviewing that database during the week it is listed. Thank you for taking the time to develop and implement the challenge.

Sanborn Maps

In Sanborn Maps, I was able to discover a lot of history regarding Dell Rapids. I chose November 1893. Back in 1893 the street names were different. The numbered streets were names and LaDelle was LaBelle. The main street which is now 4th Street was named Pearl. I located the Dell Rapids Opera House which is still in use today. In fact, it has just been newly renovated back to the original design (or as close as could be replicated). The Dell Rapids Public School was located where the Public Elementary School is located today. There is a historical plaque commemorating the original school at the location.

I continued to search and chose 1911. I found all of the names for the now numbered streets. I also found the Baptist Church that is currently being used as the Baptist Church in Dell Rapids. On the 1911 map I was also able to locate the Public Library which is still the library in Dell Rapids today. I then searched 1927 and found that at some point between 1911 and 1927 the named east/west streets had been changed to numbered streets. It was during that time that LaBelle was changed to LaDelle.

This another database that can be very addicting. You find more and more reasons to research just a little more. Patrons will love using this database.

Heritage Quest

In Heritage Quest, I used PERSI and searched for Laura Ingalls Wilder. I found an article in the periodical "True West". I clicked on the button to order the article. I was then directed to a form that would need to be completed and mailed with a check for $7.50. After the article is copied, it would be mailed to me and I would be billed $0.20 per page. In searching for Laura Ingalls Wilder, I discovered many other interesting articles. I then chose to search the Revolutionary War and found a seven page document on George Washington. It was an original document that had been scanned in and was as exciting to find as it was difficult to read.

This is a database I have never opened and researched in. I found it has valuable historical information on almost any topic a patron is interested. We have some young patrons very interested in Abe Lincoln. It would be great to get them started using this database. They would take their excitement to school and spread their enthusiasm!

AncestoryLibrary

AncestoryLibrary can be very addicting. As I searched my name I discovered there were four other people in the United States with my first and last maiden name. I then researched my married name and found my date of birth and the locations I have lived since being married. However, my current address is listed last as a previous address.

My quest for grandparents or great-grandparents in a census report was a little more difficult. I was unable to locate my paternal grandfather and grandmother in a census report. However, I was able to find my paternal grandfather's parents. I printed the page the listed my paternal great-grandfather and great-grandmother and their children. My grandfather is listed as one of the children. It is interesting to locate relatives. In doing so, new spellings for your name may be found as well as long lost relatives.

In AncestoryLibrary I performed a search under "Photos and Maps" and type "South Dakota" in the keyword. I found close to 180,00 results with pictures. Most of the results are for yearbooks. I refined the search by putting Dell Rapids in for the location. This gave me no results. In addition to the pictures, there were almost 140,000 results for maps, atlases and Gazettes. Most of these results were in the U.S. Indexed County Land Ownership Maps.

In researching with AncestoryLibrary, I discovered there is more information than a person can possible research in just a couple of hours. I now understand how the genealogy researchers find themselves spending hours, days and years researching their family history. This is a valuable resource for all patrons. Although it can be purchased by individuals, it is an expense they could avoid by visiting their local library.

Learning Express Library

This database in unlimited. It offers very valuable resources ranging from practice tests and resume writing to ebooks on numerous topics. Even those patrons who feel they are not computer literate will feel comfortable using this datebase.

I choose to start the PSAT practice exam. This was an excellent practice exam. This is no pressure to finish within a certain amount of time and the explanation on how the solve the problem is very easy to understand. Many students will find these practice exams very valuable. The other practice exams available make this database an excellent addition to all libraries. It is very expensive to purchase all these exams and keep them up-to-date. The Learning Express Library makes is possible to offer current practice tests to all patrons.

The job searching and workplace skills is a valuable asset to the database. We have numerous patrons who visit the library who are actively seeking employment. The resume writing is very user friendly and the process takes no time. I have not developed a current resume and found the process very encouraging. Many programs cause some frustration by the time you have completed the resume. This is very easy to follow and offers excellent tips as you progress.

The ebooks are great. I choose a book on alternative careers for teachers. It was very easy to maneuver within the text and the information very current. The font was easy to read and the program was again was very user friendly. There are many options within the book such as searching, viewing pages, go to a page number, view comments and attachments, print, save, share the document, and create a PDF. The cost savings for all libraries is tremendous.

CAMIO (Catalogue of Art Museum Images Online)

The results for Paul Revere were 18 items created from silver or metal silver. Among the items were a wine quart, cream pot, sauceboat, goblet, sugar bowl, teapot, tankard, teaspoon, coffee urn, covered bowl, sugar urn, sugar basket, and a Sons of Libery bowl.

The results for Sioux were 16 oil canvas paintings of Sioux in daily activities, a pipe bowl, gauntlets, bead work, items made from hides, and many more. The date each work was created, the type of art it is, the creator, and where it is located are some of the facts found on the reults page. Most of the works for the Sioux are found at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

I choose Picasso as the artist to search and this resulted in 849 of his works. The location would be very useful for anyone travelling to the location or planning a trip. This database would be exceptional when included in the lesson plans for courses studying art or history. It provides a method for students to explore the work of artists and study the art of different time periods without having the cost of a field trip. I should have used this a couple of months ago when a patron needed expamples of paintings for Rembrandt. We had a book with only two and he needed 10. Wow! He would have been so impressed by how easy it is to find paintings.

The subject I chose to search is Jesus. This resulted in many works so I narrowed it to engravings. The results page listed the works, the creator, title, subject, and description of each work. It also it has an option to view the work in high resolution full image when you click on a specific work. The favorites feature is a definite plus to the database. It allows the person searching the database to select the specific works. When he/she chooses to "view favorites" the works selected appear in the order each was on the results list. However, you can rearrange the works in the order you would like them, view a slide show, and even compare two works. You can also choose to put them on a webpage. These options are very easy to complete with the instructions given.

This database is great for learning and appreciating the works of artists. It would enchance any high school or college level course without additional costs.

Archive Grid

This data base is one that I may never have thought to use if it hadn't been for this challenge. When I did the search on Sitting Bull, I learned he was a leader of the Hunpapa Sioux. The card gave the three other names he is known by and the highlights of his life. I found it interesting that he toured with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West show.

I tried to do a search on Houdini, Jesse James, Wild Bill Hickok, and Annie Oakley. Each of these had no material. I then chose to search Laura Ingalls Wilder. There were many sources to choose from. There were several books and actual letters of correspondence of Laura's family members. It was interesting to note that there were several links on the page. For instance, there was a lesson plan link and links to related topics. The citation for the source is also given on the result screen. When I clicked on the link on the family correspondence source, one of the letters was available to read. The source listed every topic the collection covers. Most of the material for Laura Ingalls Wilder is found at the Wisconsin Historical Society.

This is a great resource for those who are interested in the past, planning lessons, or writing reports. It is very easy to navigate and the information very credible. This again allows libraries to expand their resources. Libraries are able to offer additional sources of information with no cost to the patron and or the library.

WorldCat

The advanced search helps to narrow down the results. When used correctly, you will probably have only the book you are searching in the results. The search boxes offer many ways to search, for example you can select keyword, access method, accession number, ISBN, language, material type, publisher, subject, title, and many others. I chose Battlefield of the Mind in the title phrase box and the limiter "books". There are 629 libraries worldwide that own the title. The top library was Alexander Mitchell  Library in South Dakota.
Further searching revealed that the call number for the book is 248.4. The author, Joyce Meyer, has additional books available through WorldCat. Those books are Beauty for Ashes, Joyce Meyer: A life of redemption and destiny, one book in chinese, two journals, and one internet source. The subject this book falls under is Christian Life and in selecting this subject 168,444 results were found. One can also search the publisher for additional sources. When you have found the book you are searching for, you can search the South Dakota State Library, borrow from another library, and cite the item. For patrons writing a research paper, the citing ability would be very beneficial. It provides many different citing styles to select from. At the library the ability to find the call number is very beneficial for the cataloguer. This resource has alot of potiential uses for both the library staff and patrons. When used to its full potential many patrons will be using this resource for locating books, citing sources, and finding adddition resources for a subject of interest.

I have never used the other databases available through WorldCat. I found it to be another great resource for libraries. I selected one result that was an article and one that was a picture. Regarding the article, on the main page of the link is the abstract of the article and a link on the page that downloads the entire article. The main page for a picture provided additional links which all lead to the details for the picture. The page also provided the description, type, source, rights, and more for the picture. Above is an example of the of a picture I found in my result list.

netLibrary

I found netLibrary to be an invaluable resource for libraries and classrooms of all sizes; however, the content is directed towards more advanced students and readers. Most students wait until the last possible minute to find resources for a report. With netLibrary, the students are able to research credible resources without waiting for a book to be sent through interlibrary loan or be returned to the library

I chose to research twins. I found the text Double Duty to be very informative. This text had information for a parent of twins from conception through the school years. I also did a search on juggling. I found it was much too broad and found books on every possible subject. I then changed my search to magic tricks which was also too broad. I decided to narrow the search by using quotes and searched "magic tricks". This narrowed my search to a very manageable number of sources. I reviewed The Complete Idiot's Guide to Magic Tricks. It was great. Without checking anything out or waiting for a book through interlibrary loan, I was able discover how to preform magic tricks. I did not try any, but I may have a patron who will!

I have never heard of Constitution Day, but I was able to find many resources on the Constitution. Among those I found are A Companion to the United States Constitution and Its Amendments, Representing Popular Sovereignity: The Constitution in American Political Culture, and Constitution of the United States of America. There were many more resources. Each student would be able to research a book needed for this project. It is possible for one student to monopolize several books which could cause problems for others needing to research. The key is to make sure each student closes a book as he/she completes his/her research from that source.

For the project on Western history, I typed Nebraska in the publisher box. This is a very quick way to find only books published in a particular state. I would not have thought to search using the publisher box in ths manner, but doing so I found several very promising resources. Some of the books I researched were From Fort Laramie to Wounded Knee: In the West That Was, Lewis and Clark on the Great Plains: A Natural History, and The Sixth Grandfather: Black Elk's Teachings Given to John G. Neihardt.

Gale Virtual Reference Library

The GVRL is exactly what the name implies. It is a reference library. I used the Gale Encyclopedia of Surgery to research shoulder surgery because this is a common surgery. It explains the procedure, risks, recovery, etc. The information is very detailed and would be valuable to anyone having any type of surgery. I also used the Endangered Species to find information on the giant armadillo. The information in the GVRL is for secondary grades and higher. An elementary student may find the content and reading level intimidating. Those working on research papers, school projects, or reading on a current topics would find this database very useful. It is a great resource for all libraries. All libraries utilizing the resource would save money and space by directing patrons to this database rather than purchasing reference books for the content found in the GVRL.

I chose to assist the student in finding what foods contain zinc. I researched the source of zinc in the Gale Encylclopedia of Allied Health. I was able to find out the best sources of zinc are beef, chicken, turkey, milk, cheese, and yogurt. Although zinc is also found in whole grains, beans and nuts, the high fiber of these foods prevents zinc from being absorbed by the body. I also researched other sources and found that zinc was mentioned as a treatment for many illnesses and that there are several types of zinc used for the illness. The zinc needed for cold sores is different than that needed for diaper rash. I also discovered that not all the references stated the sources of zinc. I found the index very helpful for determining which reference book to use. The read to me feature is excellent. It makes reading some the medical terms much easier and the patron is able to hear the proper pronunciation. GVRL is an excellent resource that we will use alot more at our library.

Proquest

I decided to search birth order. The initial search resulted in 820 articles. I narrowed this down by selecting full text and 12 months. This resulted in 27 articles which was much more manageable. The "search more articles like this" box to the right always gave me thousands of matches. I don't believe that would be very valuable to someone looking up information. Since all of the article are from journals, newspapers, etc., this database is very valuable to anyone who would need to research on any topic whether it is a research paper or a personal interest.

I did a search in the publications with The Horn Book Magazine. I was very impressed by how far back the magazine dates go and how easy the articles are to locate. I did not realize the number of journals available in Proquest. I was also surprised to find that I can choose to have the article in the language of my choice. I have used the option to email articles to patrons who needed assistance in researching a topic and it is wonderful. Proquest is very well organized and easy to navigate.

SIRS

SIRS Discoverer

SIRS discoverer is very user friendly. Even those who are new to researching on the computer will find it easy to use. The color coding would be very useful when working with students because they can learn what colot to look for on the the entries for their reading level. The tabs at the top make selecting a specific type of reference material easy. The site also allows several options for the material found. It can be printed, saved, emailed, etc. Presentation and ease of use are high points of this database.

The database features are wonderful. Every topic you choose in a datebase feature lists essential facts for the topic such as symbols, facts, history, economy, wacky facts, contacts, government and much more. The activities database and educator's resources are invaluable to educators everywhere. In many rural areas, it is hard to get to a store or have enough money in the budget to purchase supplementary material. This is at the educator's fingertips at no cost. Many school assignments require the student to design a worksheet or activity for a topic. The activity database would make these and many other tasks much easier and save valuable time. A library could print out activity sheets for students to complete as a challenge or to supplement a libray lesson.

SIRS Issue Researcher

The information available to expand on any of the leading issues is invaluable. This is an excellent, well-organized resource for current topics. It contains everything that would be required to support a topic. There are graphs, websites, magazine articles, activitites, etc. The curriculum pathfinders are also an excellent resource on SIRS Issue Researcher. In all of the subject areas I researched, the resources were numerous. An educator at any level would find useful tools for every content area. SIRS is a valuable resource to students, educators, and any patron interested in gaining knowledge.

World Book Foreign Language Edition

L'Encyclopédie Découverte is would be the one I would recommend to patrons wanting to learn a new language or those whose second language is English. The main reason is due to the fact that it includes all three languages: English, Spanish and French. It is very helpful to be able to switch for one language to the other on the same picture. The comparison of two animals found in Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos is wonderful.

The reading aloud is great for learning proper pronumciation. It is very helpful to be able to speed it up or slow it down. A person learning a new language would be able to practice speaking aloud and check their progress against the reading available. Immediate feedback is very beneficial to the learning process.

World Book Public Library Edition

Wolrd Book Online Kids

Aardvark
An aardvark lives in Africa making its home in the ground.

World Book Info Finder

World Book Info Finder edition contains more information on the aardvark than the kids edition. The information found in the info finder edition is more detailed than that found in kids. There is more detail on its size, home and habits. In addtion to this the reading level is more advanced and the words are typed in a smaller font.

World Book Online Reference Center

The types of information that would be most valuable to the patrons at our library would be the outline on the left due to the fact that it will save alot of research time. Most of our patrons are requesting information to write reports; therefore, the options on the right side bar would also be the very valuable. The magazine artitles, websites, and primary sources would be at the top.

World Book - School Edition

World Book Kids

The Shrew
A mammal who lives in marshes, woods, fields, and gardens. They are very small and weigh about as much as a penny.

World Book Student
The information in the student edition contains more details than that found in the kids edition. There are also more entries with the word "shrew" to choose from in the student edition. The picture of the shrew is the same in both editions.

World Book Advanced

Brazil
In the left and right side bars are additional selections that are more specific regarding the country. Our patrons would find the right sidebar the most helpful. It would allow them to find magazine articles, special reports, and websites for the topic they are researching. The left side is an outline of the article in World Book and this would be very useful because it would cut down on the time spent researching.

World Book Discovery

World Book Discover will assist those patrons who are not fluent readers of English understand the article with two options. One option is for the patrons to choose to have the article translated to the language of his/her choice. The other option is to choose to have the article read aloud. When the article is read aloud , the patron can choose to have the reader slow down or read faster.
